Tasks of the teaching lab
The biology teaching lab is responsible for organizing the training of laboratory technicians at ETH Zurich. The vocational trainers accompany the apprentices through their apprenticeship, monitor their learning development and offer support for apprentices as well as for vocational trainers. As a central coordination office, the teaching laboratory works closely with the vocational trainers in the research labs as well as the lead organization HR Vocational training. In addition to conceptualizing training and ensuring training quality, the teaching laboratory also conducts basic training courses. Our focus is on microbiology, molecular biology and cell biology.
Tasks of the teaching lab:
- Conducting laboratory courses in the teaching lab
- Conceptual design, coordination and further development of the training
- Support of the training in the research labs
- Participating as experts for practical final examinations
- Participating in the examination board for laboratory professions
- Membership and participation in the professional association of the Canton
- Accompanying apprentices in the sense of promoting their learning development
Infrastructure
The Biology teaching lab is located at Technopark Zurich, an external site of the ETH. Our premises cover an area of 423 m2. We benefit from a modern infrastructure, which includes:
- Classrooms with digital whiteboard, microscopes and stereo magnifiers for the apprentices
- A fully equipped laboratory with 24 workstations and 5 chapels
- Equipment: thermocycler, qPCR thermocycler, SDS-Page and agarose gel electrophoresis equipment, gel documentation system, photometer, pH meter, platereader, Nanodrop, centrifuges, Speed-Vac
- A microbiology laboratory with sterile benches and incubators
- A cell culture laboratory with sterile benches, CO2 incubator, cell counter and digital inverted microscope
- A chemical storage and weighing room with analytical and precision balances
- A dishwashing room with autoclave
Directions
The Biology Teaching Lab is part of the Department of Biology (D-BIOL). The laboratories and offices are located at Technopark Zurich, an external site of the ETH, with the building designation PFA.
