Federica Sallusto

Federica Sallusto received the degree of Doctor in Biology from the University of Rome and performed postdoctoral training at the Instituto Superiore di Sanità in Rome and at the Basel Institute for Immunology, where she was a member from 1997 to 2000. Since 2000 she is Head of the Cellular Immunology Laboratory at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine, Università della Svizzera italiana, in Bellinzona and since 2015 Director of the Center of Medical Immunology in the same institute. Federica Sallusto’s research interests are focused on the understanding of the mechanisms that control T cell priming and regulate cytokine production and homing capacities. She has made seminal contributions to dendritic cell biology and formulated key concepts for T cell differentiation and immunological memory.

Currently, she and her team are using novel approaches to address fundamental questions in the context of the immune response to different classes of antigens, such as microbial pathogens, allergens or self-antigens, and to gain insights into mechanisms that induce host protection or immune-mediated pathology.
