Responsibilities of the Doctoral Studies Panel

The Doctoral Studies Panel of the D-BIOL meets approximately every 6 - 8 weeks. The Doctoral Studies Panel acts on behalf of the Department Conference of the D-BIOL and reports to the Department Conference regularly. The panel is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Approval of dissertations carried out externally
  • Approval of co-referees (i.e. all referees who are not elected ETH professors). Co-referees should be named as soon as they are identified, the latest one year before the prospective end of the dissertation
  • Approval of candidates without qualifying exams
  • Proposal and approval of qualifying exams for PhD applicants in cooperation with the dissertation supervisors
  • Approval of research proposals
  • Elaboration of guidelines for doctoral studies
  • Evaluation of the disserations proposed for distinction
