Inaugural and farewell lectures
The Golden Owl is a sympathy-prize awarded to faculty members of ETH Zurich by the students. Each year, VSETH, ETH Zurich’s student association, confers the owls to lecturers in appreciation of their excellent teaching. All ETH-members with a teaching assignment can be nominated for the Golden Owl. One person per department will be awarded the prize. At the ETH Day 2013 the award was given to Prof. Wolf-Dietrich Hardt for his outstanding achievements in teaching. Link to the website of the Golden Owl. (28.11.2013)
An international research team from the Paul Scherrer Institute, Utrecht University and the pharmaceutical company UCB has now taken an important step towards understanding the action of botulinum neurotoxin A. The Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology 2013 was awarded to James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof for their research leading to the elucidation of the vesicle traffic within the cell. At its meeting of 17 July 2013 the ETH Board has appointed ten individuals as ETH professors, four of which in the Department of Biology: Dr. Beat Christen, currently senior research associate at Stanford University, to assistant professor for Experimental Systems Biology, Prof. Dr. Kaspar Locher, currently associate professor at ETH Zurich, as Full Professor of Molecular Membrane Biology, Dr. Martin Pilhofer, currently postdoctoral researcher at the California Institute of Technology, as Assistant Professor of Cell Biology and Prof. Dr. Karsten Weis, currently full professor at the University of California, Berkeley, as Full Professor of Cellular Dynamics.
